Mature skin is most often a dryer type skin since oily skin is well lubricated and does not develop fine lines and wrinkles as fast. For this reason, if you suffered from oily skin for a good amount of your life, you will be delighted to know that you will likely have less wrinkles than all your friends if you take care of yourself. The onset of mature skin for most people begins around fifty, however genetics and lifestyle choices paired with prolonged proper skin care, or lack there of, can extend that number to sixty or shorten it to forty. The idea is to extend this number past sixty with great common sense lifestyle choices: reduce sun exposure, don't drink in excess, avoid smoking, eat a well balanced diet, exercise, and take proper care of your skin for each stage of your life. The onset of mature skin is often caused by environmental factors as well. Keep in mind that mature skin loves high temperature and high humidity; just remember to keep out of the sun or use proper sun protection in these types of climates.

If you need to give medication to your pet, give your pet a treat, then give a treat with the medicine inside the treat and finish with a third treat. If the medicine is liquid you can make a funnel with the back part of your dog's mouth (lower cheek) and pour the liquid there. If your pet spits out the pill open their mouth. 1. Use Your Car Engine Or Dishwasher To Cook

This isn't exactly a "lazy" exercise, except what's lazier than combining cooking and driving? Maybe not lazy, but efficient. Regardless, it is one that intrigued me. My friend Erika, who is way more environmentally friendly than I am (and I totally commend her for it) told me about an email she received from one of the list serves she was on about cooking in your dishwasher. Yes, that's right. You simply wrap the salmon in foil, place it next to the dirty caked on left over macaroni and cheese pan, and that plate with leftover grilled cheese, or is that lasagna, wait didn't I make that last week, why is that plate just now getting cleaned? 2. Use Your Local Library

The library is amazing. Have you been to your local library lately? There are tons of books and CDs and movies and weird smells and questionable people... and guess what? It's all free. For a limited time. The books and movies and CDs, you have to return those. The weird smells will always be there. How does this help the environment? Well it's the whole concept of recycling and reusing books. How often do you re-read books? Not that often probably. And you can make this an "extreme green" experience by riding your bike or walking to the library, picking up some books on helping the environment and carrying those books back to your compound in your cloth "I Heart Mother Earth" bag. And you can stop and buy some locally grown corn and soy beans on the way home.

3. Get and Use a Dish Washer

When I figured this one out, I was ecstatic. I hate doing dishes. Well, I like the feeling of the hot water and letting my arms sit in the warm water, and watching the bubbles form. But the the disgusting pieces of food start to float in the water and that smell mixed with the water and really I have to pick up those pieces of egg now floating in the water are enough to make me throw up in my mouth. And I also hate when I rinse off the dishes before I put them in soaking water, forget about the dishes cause I got distracted catching up on Lost and have to pull all the dishes out of the cold water with the floating rice all around. And when I had roommates and they would put their plates or bowls with food still in them (food that should have been put into a Tupperware container and saved, or thrown out) just right into the soaking water.

Dishwashers use endrgy. True. But the amount of water you waste waiting for the sink to fill up and the water running while you rinse off every dish, is far more than the amount of energy the dishwasher uses. So load it up, go watch some TV or read a book (that you got from the library) and then don't put the dishes away and just use them straight out of the dishwasher.

4. Take Shorter Showers

You really don't need to be that clean. If you want to really be hardcore you'll use Dr. Bonner's all in one soap and use that to wash your hair and body and then clean the tub afterward. And if you've ever spent time around hippies, you know we should all take our hygiene tips from them. But seriously just taking 5 to 10 minute showers saves a lot of water. Really you could aim for less.

5. Don't Run The Water While Brushing Your Teeth

This is a pet peeve of mine. Others include the sounds people make when they're eating. Also incessant throat clearing is equivalent to nails on a chalkboard. Anyways, this one, bothers me because it's so unnecessary. And I'm by no means an environmental extremist. Fine, you don't recycle cause it's not available in your neighborhood or you hate the earth or think global warming is a conspiracy theory. Whatever. You drive everywhere, even to the store that is 2 blocks from your house. Okay I'll let it slide. But when your brushing your teeth, put that toothpaste on the toothbrush, put a splash of water on there. Turn the faucet off. Brush your teeth. For 2 to 5 minutes (yes, that's the ADA recommendation) then spit. Turn faucet back on and rinse your toothbrush off. Done. If the water's running while you are brushing your teeth, it's such a waste because it serves no purpose. At least the water used in rinsing dishes off is doing something, this is just pointless.

6. Keep Your Thermostat Down Or At Least Under Control

Here's how this works. In the winter, you keep your apartment/house a little bit colder, and in the summer a little bit warmer. So you'll want to turn the thermostat down in the winter and up in the summer. The hardest time to do this is right when winter first starts, because that's when it feels the coldest. That first 35 degree day. You will want to set your thermostat to 80. Don't. Just remind yourself that when it gets down to 10 degrees, you'll be longing for the day it's 35. If you are cold, there are novel things you can use to provide warmth to yourself, blankets, sweaters, scarves. All of these are readily available in most major cities. Also, practice mental temperature. As I'm writing this I'm realizing this website is based in Los Angeles, and that you don't have to deal with this. So for those of you in warmer climates, the reverse is true. Your air conditioning can be set at 70 or 68. Or higher. If you think it's hot in your apartment, go walk outside and then come back in. In fact, go walk to the farmer's marker with your cloth bag and pick up some locally grown produce and then go back to your home and feel the difference. Also, this saves money. So you can do it for that reason, too.

7. Consume Less Animal Product

This helps the environment, helps your health, helps world hunger, it's an all around good goal to have. And I'm not at all urging you to go vegan, or even vegetarian or exist on a diet of tofu, beans and sprouts. Just one day a week, don't eat meat. You probably already do it without thinking but maybe now you'll be conscious of it. And that no meat, while I would urge you to choose healthy options (I do have a Masters of Public Health, I'm supposed to encourage healthy behaviors) could be a cheese pizza. Or macaroni and cheese. Those are fine. Let's just start with one day a week not eating meat. Hmm... what's a good alliteration for trying this new goal out. Oh good, someone else already thought of one Meatless Mondays: http://www.meatlessmonday.com/join-the-movement/. If Monday doesn't work for you, you could do Tofu-Friendly Tuesdays or Thursdays, Free from Meat Fridays, Sucks Cause I Can't Eat Meat Saturdays...

8. Use Recyclable (Cloth) Bags

They're cute, they have tongue in cheek, somewhat ironic in your face comments on them that would please any hipster. Or they're from several public health conferences you've attended. Whatever the case, they are pretty easy to find. Sometimes you have to pay for them, but you can find them for free. And here's the tricky part (and where I mess up), um, you need to remember you have them and use them when you go grocery shopping. My problem is with working full time, and having 2 part time jobs on the outside, I a) waste a lot of gas and b) often go grocery shopping when I think of it, and then get to the store and they say "Paper or Plastic?" and I say "crap". But I'm going to try and use cloth bags more and then also, only buy what fits in the bags, rather than way more groceries than I could possibly eat before their expiration date, cause then I end up throwing it out, and I think Mother Earth hates that as well.

9. Walk Or Run... Or Don't, And Do Less Laundry

I was researching for this list and saw "Walk, Run, or Jog" as an option to help the environment. And I thought, okay, that makes sense, exercise is good for you, and you can walk to the store (or wherever) and help the environment and get your exercise in. And then I thought about how often I work out, and how often I do laundry because I work out so much, and my advice is maybe don't run or jog. And do less laundry, cause you won't have to. Or really, once you let your clothes air dry they don't smell that bad and you can wear them again. Or try not to sweat as much. I don't know, to me this seemed like a weird pro-environment tip. Pro health and fitness and disease prevention? Yes, and I am all for that.

10.Use Cold Water To Wash Your Clothes

When I lived in D.C., my friend watched me throw all my clothes in the washer at once. "You don't separate?" she asked, almost like she was judging me. "Nope", I replied "I wash everything in cold water, so I don't have to separate, it's better for the environment." The truth is, I'm lazy and I don't want to take the time to separate colors so they don't bleed, and wash some stuff in hot and some stuff in cold. It all gets clean, and I've never shrunk anything or had anything bleed. And yeah, I'm using less hot water. There you go. And 90% of the energy used from washing clothes comes from heating water. (and yes I wash sheets and towels and some of my whites in hot)

Here's another tip: You probably don't need to use laundry detergent every time. Here's why: when you pour it into the washer a lot if stays in the washing machine, so if you just load your clothes and run the washer, there's probably still enough in there to get your clothes clean. Plus the fact that every one pours way too much into washing machines. Another option is to use Borax to clean your clothes. It uses less chemicals and is better for the environment. Your clothes won't smell like lilacs or teddy bears on top of blankets, or sunshine, but they will smell clean.

11. Reuse Plastic Bottles For Months At A Time

True environmentalists will shake their heads at this one. Also, people concerned about BPA will probably not be impressed that I've been using the same old (really old) Spring Mountain plastic bottle of water for the last 3 maybe 4 months now for when I work out. But hey, I didn't throw it away, so you know what I met you halfway. Also, I just checked and it looks like plastic bottles with recycling codes 1 and 2 are safe, so I think my bottle is a-okay. Except I'm pretty sure it's still not the healthiest thing. You can also re-use plastic bottles to catch the fruitflies in your house that will accumulate from your organic locally grown fruit you keep around, or to catch mice in your apartment, as per the video to your left. You can also purchase a Nalgene or Sigg reusable water bottle.

Lead poisoning is permanent damage. Once lead accumulates in the body, it remains there for life. The most common source for lead poisoning is caused by deteriorating lead-based paint on older windows, doors and trim, or walls or through improper renovation, repair and painting activities that cause paint to chip, peel, or flake.

Lead poisoning is a silent killer. It is an important health issue for children all around the world.

Prevention is therefore much better than treatment when it comes to lead poisoning. These are simple tips you can take to avoid exposure to lead.

1. Make sure children's hands are clean before they eat.

2. Have your water tested to ensure a safe level of lead and other minerals. You can contact your local health department to buy a kit for testing impurities in your water.

3. Never use the first water from your tap in the morning. Let it run for at least 5 minutes before you use it. It is best to use only steamed distilled, filtered, ddionized
water for drinking and cooking.

If safe drinking water is not available, treat water with grapefruit seed extract before using it. Grapefruit seeds extract is available from any health food store. Add 10 drops of extract per gallon of water and shake or stir vigorously.

4. Never over boil water. Five minutes is enough. Boiling water longer than necessary concentrates contaminants in water including lead.

5. Keep painted surfaces in good repair, so that older layers of paint are not exposed, chipping or peeling. Hire a professional to remove lead-based paint from any surface. It can poison human by burning or scrapping layers of paint. Do not allow children to eat paint chips.

6. Do not buy food in cans sealed with lead solder which leaches into food. If you buy canned foods, look for lead-free cans that have no side seam.

7. Do not store alcoholic beverages, acidic foods, vinegar, fruit juices and foods made with tomatoes based in lead crystal glassware for any length of time. The lead that gives fine crystal its sparkle and brilliance leaches into foods and beverages served or stored in it,

8. If you are pregnant, avoid drinking hot beverages from lead-glazed ceramic cups or mugs. Babies and children should not be fed from crystal dishes and glassware at all.

9. If you drink wine, always wipe the mouth of the bottle well with a damp cloth before pouring the wine. The foil wrappers around the corks of wine bottles can deposit leads around the mouth of the bottle and contaminate the wine.

Winter Weather Preparedness Tips

When winter weather rolls around, everyone knows it's time to stock up on the basics in case the plows and rock salt fail to keep streets clear. Next time you go out to load up on bottled water and batteries, though, double-check with your elderly neighbors and loved ones to make sure that they have everything they need to face the winter's storms as well.

It's no secret that it can be more difficult for the elderly to get out and about, especially if they've given up driving. Not only that, but our older family members and friends are more susceptible to environmental and health concerns, and if they're unable to go out and get supplies for themselves, they could be unprepared to face inclement winter weather. If you have elderly neighbors, check in on them at the first sign or warning of bad weather and make sure they're prepared.

Winter Weather Preparedness Checklist:

- Drinking water. Enough for three days; one gallon per person per day, minimum.
- Food. Choose non-perishable, easy-to-prepare foodstuffs, and have three days' worth.
- Medications and first aid. Make sure that all prescriptions are filled ahead of time, and also keep on hand basic OTC medications that might come in handy, such as Tylenol, Advil, Pepto-Bismol or Benadryl. Don't forget to include a fully-stocked first-aid kit as well! Better safe than sorry.
- Batteries. Make sure you have plenty of extra batteries in every size you need.
- Radio. A battery-run or hand-cranked radio can keep you updated on weather conditions when the power goes out.
- Flashlights. Keep plenty of these around in case the electricity dies.
- Hygiene and sanitation items. Remember to account for the possibility of pipes freezing.
- Chargers for cell phones. Conserve battery in case of emergency!
- Copies of personal documentathon. You never know what you may need, and when. It's always a good idea to keep a copy of important personal documents-birth certificates, deeds, insurance policies, and lists of medication/medical information-in a safe and waterproof place.
- Extra cash. It's always a good idea to take a little cash out of the bank before a weather emergency in case you need it.
- List of emergency contacts and family members. Write down all important names and numbers for easy reference.
- Alternate sources of heat. A fireplace or a wood- or coal-burning stove can be a lifesaver in winter weather; make sure you have plenty of whatever fuel your alternative source of heat requires.
- Any special needs items. If there's anything needed by any member of your household on a daily basis that isn't listed here-don't forget about it!
- Warm blankets and clothes. Sometimes alternative sources of heat aren't an option; bundle up with plenty of layers, opting for warm, loose-fitting clothes. Make sure every member of your household also has boots, hats, gloves, and other winter outerwear.
- Sand, rock salt or non-clumping kitty litter. These can all be used post-storm to make walkways and steps less slippery.

Remember-it's always better to err on the side of caution and over-prepare for an emergency that never occurs than to be underprepared when a winter storm hits. How to Keep the Environment Clean

The two aspects of our environment most invoked when we talk about keeping the environment clean are litter and water pollution. We will discuss both in this article.


Litter is ugly and it can harm people and wildlife. Picking up litter can be costly for cities and highway departments.

Dog fouling in public places (another form of litter) is a serious health risk, particularly for young children.

Cigarette butts are another unpleasant form of litter. They may seem small, but with several trillion butts littered every year they are the number one source of litter in this county. Cigarette butts make up a large part of much urban litter and they can take up to 12 years to break down.

So how do we keep litter off our public places and keep the environment clean?
The answer is, of course, firstly educate the public to take their litter home, and when they do not, it is necessary to ensure that efficient street cleaning is provided.

Street cleaning is controlled by the Department of Public Works in all towns and cities and is usually removed by appointed contractors or the Council's own direct labor force. When it works well you will usually find that the local businesses take an active interest in assisting in streamlining the process with also making further regular consultation with the community. Street cleaning is often, but not always, carried out for extended hours, and these hours may range from 8 am until 12 or 2 pm in our big cities. Street cleaning is an absolute necessity in all modern well run cities.

Street cleansing is a manual task and labor is a significant cost. Satisfaction with the cleanliness of streets and commercial areas has improved in the UK since privatization. One reason likely for this is that previously the Council's staff had to be the policemen ensuring the efficiency of their own work. Human nature is such that to be on both sides of such a role seldom works efficiently.

Street cleansing is only a part of city housekeeping which in this article is just a part of how to keep the environment clean. The council (municipal) health department's business is to see that all the people have pure air, pure water, pure food, and are protected from contagious diseases.

Street cleaning is an important element of city housekeeping and is provided more and more by highly mechanized equipment such as through the use of street sweepers and flushers. Most streets are scheduled for cleaning at least five times per year, and paved alleys are cleaned once.

Street cleaning must always be strictly enforced, and react to events when litter will build up more quickly, but without clean water in the rivers and streams throughout the city the municipal authorities could hardly be said to be keeping the environment clean.

River Pollution

The avoidance of river pollution is if anything more essential than street cleansing, especially where the poorer population must rely on the river water for domestic and even drinking water use.

If asked how to keep the environment clean from river pollution we would have to say by collecting all sewage and treating it before allowing it to discharge back into the river downstream.

River pollution is the most devastative phenomena to health in the poor and developing. Pollution is occurring when the water shows an alteration of physical and chemical parameters such as odor, taste, colour, turbidity.

If polluted water is tested in a water quality analysis laboratory there are a number of tell-tale changes you will notice. These are exemplified by changes in total hardness, pH, chlorides etc. Expect to see BOD, and COD in increased quantities as well, among others.

River pollution is a serious problem. In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the issues involved but, at the same time, continued urbanization and industrialization and the continued growth of population produce ever-increasing amounts of waste for disposal.

Where sewage treatment plants have been installed the levels of indicator bacteria and nitrogen in the discharge should be tracked to measure management performance. If a failure in discharge quality occurs the municipal authorities must act to determine changes needed in monitoring protocol to avoid any further occurrences. Levels of any pollutant can be measured by water quality testing methods, and once the analysis has been provided it is always important to check the data carefully against the legal standards. For example, the State of Florida sets the safe health standard for bacteria as less than 1000 faecal coliform bacteria per 100 milliliters.

The most common sources of pollution are domestic water discharges from the houses in the catchment area, and uncontrolled dumps of solid domestic wastes along tributary banks and in dry ravines. Industrial discharge can be a major cause of pollution. Each industrial discharge usually contains chemicals and organic compounds which can enter the bodies of many aquatic animals. Even ground water can be polluted from the soakage pits, septic tanks, manure, garbage, etc. and that eventually discharges to the rivers still worsening the problem.

Industrial pollutants from smaller units continue to be a problem. 5. Research common problems - Different species of plants not only will have different requirements where light, heating, plantation and nutrients are concerned, but may be prone to various deficiencies and problems. If you are aware of these, you will be able to react faster if things go wrong.

6. Combine plants with similar needs - If you are keeping several different species of plants together, then it is a good idea to keep plants which have broadly similar needs. You are far less likely to experience problems this way and it allows a little freedom when using fertilizers or changing other aspects of water chemistry.

7 Research, research, research - This is perhaps the most vital aspect of aquarium keeping generally, knowing what you are doing before you even get close to cycling or stocking the tank. The more you know, the easier it is to respond to problems which arise and the early you will be able to spot them.

The more that you can learn about the inhabitants of your aquarium and ways in which to keep on top of maintenance, the better your aquarium should fare generally. The time and effort taken in the start will pay off many times over in the long run.

1 Relax
In all my years in the business consulting industry, I've seen countless executives and employees experience anxiety and episodes of up-tightness all because of an ISO registration and ongoing surveillance by an auditor or registrar. The best way to ease the anxiety is to make the appropriate preparations before the auditing process takes place. If you think you've done all you could to make sure things go as smoothly as possible, and you still feel anxious, then you're just being silly.

2 Brush up on your work description
Not only should you do this, the people working under you should do so as well. Know what your job description is, know what your respective roles are, and know what your responsibilities in the organization are.

3 Be Clean and Sharp
I'm not going to mince words with you. Appearances count, a lot. So be sure your employees are at least presentable, workstations are clean, and any records of any kind are just a few minutes away from being found-nothing puts an audit more into perspective than organization.

4 Don't be on the Defensive
Auditors are not your enemies. An audit is not an adversarial situation, so don't be too defensive, and above all, don't argue with the auditor. Ask for questions if you want to make clarifications, but don't argue with points your auditor makes.

Health Tips for Nurses to Prevent Getting Sick

As a physician, I sincerely appreciate all that nurses go through. You put up with cranky patients and arrogant doctors day in and day out. You are on your feet running the halls all day which turns into foot problems years later. Hours are long yet hardly boring. Then you go home and likely prepare meals, prepare your kids for school and, if you're lucky, you can go for a walk with your partner or get some exercise in. That isn't even the half of it.

Nurses are exposed to radiation, cleaning chemicals, sterilizing chemicals, infectious agents, insane patients (and doctors), sharp needles, noxious gases, latex, formaldehyde, heavy metals, dangerous medications and emotional roller coasters - the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. You love your job. You're passionate about what you do and wouldn't trade it for the world. There are few jobs like it and you kick ass at it. Let's keep you healthy. Your question asks 'tips for us nurses to stay healthy' because you're 'exposed to so many illnesses.' You forgot to mention that nurses are also exposed to so many chemicals. As a naturopathic physician, I always aim for prevention and education.

That said, there are the core nutrients which are needed by all, especially nurses and other people who are exposed to chemicals and other hazards in the workplace. Beneficial supplement choices for nurses to prevent getting sick:

* Vitamin D3: If I had to pick one nutrient for a nurse, it would be vitamin D3. Why? Because it supports mood, bone health, immunity, cardiovascular to name a few.

- Get your blood levels of vitamin D3 tested.

- If they are below 60, you need to load up on vitamin D3. Consider taking 10,000 IU of Vitamin D3 per day and then measuring again at 3 months time.

- If your levels are near 80, then you need to supplement with 5,000 IU per day and measure your vitamin D3 blood levels every 3 months.

- According to John Cannell of Vitamin D3 Council, 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 is the suggested daily maintenance dose during the low sun exposure months.

- For daily maintenance during summer months or if you do not feel comfortable taking 5,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily, then take 2,000 IU of Vitamin D3 daily.

* Adrenal Support: Given the amount of stress nurses are under, nurses should support their adrenals. Nurses can feel calm in the most intense moments if their adrenals are balanced. Nurses can feel consistently energized without having to resort to 10 cups of coffee a shift or drinking corn syrup laden energy drinks. Sleep is also deeper and waking refreshed is possible.

- I recommend nurses take 2 capsules of Adrenal Support Plus in the morning on waking and 2 more in the afternoon.

- Do not take Adrenal Support of any type within 5 hours of going to sleep as it will keep you awake.

* Potent Multivitamin/Mineral: Obtaining nutrients from food is next to impossible due to corporate farming methods, pesticides, herbicides, lengthy improper handling and transportation and depleted soils.
